Quick Media Converter 3.5.7 (QMC)
Hello, Hello! I’m back I think.. I would have had this posted yesterday for you guys, but my hard
drive on my main system crashed a couple days ago and I lost quite a bit of things, namely my access to this site that was stored in Live Writer, and my stored drafts…. Doug was a bit busy (fishing in Canada! -he was working too…) so he didn’t have access to emails, but he got back to me today with my login info..
Anyway, today I’ve got another freebie video converter for you, this one though is a bit more than a video conversion tool, it does have some other features as well, like audio conversion and built in CamStudio that allows you to capture things you’re doing on your computer to video, like games, presentations or whatever…
If you didn’t figure it out by the title of this post the software is called ‘QMC’ or Quick Media Converter, it’s from Cocoonsoftware and the best part ,as I mentioned, its that it’s totally free! Free is nice yes, but is it worthwhile though? Or would you be better of with a pay software program? That’s what I intend to tell you about, so continue on…
As usual here’s the specs and features first off:

There’s a lot more information over on the Cocoonsoftware website, that’s just a brief look, stop over HERE to read the rest…
You know the routine by now, install it and start it up… you’re greeted with a nice GUI to get you started. There is though two choices for the interface, ‘Easy Mode’ and ‘Expert Mode’, the first two icons on the bar are for switching between the modes. There are also icons for ‘Webcam’, ‘Cocoonsoft’ and ‘CamStudio’ as well here for you to choose.
Easy Mode is just that, fairly easy, you can just the pictures to select the format you want to convert
to, clicking on each picture will give you a drop down box with other choices if they are available, that’s step one. Step two would be to select the file you wish to convert, just navigate to the directory and that’s it. Step three is to select your Output Directory, Step four is optional, but you can capture screenshots at intervals if you wish. Step five is to resize the output movie if you wish to. Step six is to select the output format, and step seven is just to Start the conversion.
Expert mode allows for moire customization, the basic things are the same as easy mode, but on the bottom you’ve got Video and Audio options and Cropping options as well, this options allow you to customize the output of the converted movie even further. For the most part the Easy Mode will be what most people use, the Expert Mode is, well, for experts, if you’re not sure what all of those options mean you could really mess up the end movie.
Ok, now to convert a movie, as usual I’m using Stargate Ultimate edition, I’ve seen this movie so
many times now I think I know it word for word… anyway, first thing is to select the format, I like Xvix or .AVI, so I picked ‘Custom Resize’ from the drop down box as i want to make it 320×240 to fit the Tilt.
Next step is to load up my movie, this software is for converting already ripped DVDs, and not for actually ripping DVDs…
Of course I selected my output directory and size of the output file, then just hit start and wait, and
wait, and wait…
Total conversion time was 39:37,which isn’t too long really. The main reason I found that it took so long was because it seems to not utilize multiple core systems. Ad you can see only the first core of my quad core CPU is really being used for the conversion process.
The end result or converted movie is also very large, coming in at 958mb, the original movie was
1.5GB, so we only really cut off about 500mb from the original size. At that output size you’d better have a nice large microSD card to carry multiple movies if you wish to.
Here’s some closing observations:
CPU Usage:
Average: 30%
Peak: 41%
Time to convert: 39:37
Output size: 958MB
The final movie quality is very good, not quite DVD quality, but the audio is synced with the video and it’s viewable.
I’m sure if I went in and played around with the settings etc I might be able to bring the size down a bit, but I wanted to see what happens using Easy Mode as that’s what most people will use and what they want, something that’s easy to use! As is though, the final converted movie is large, very large compared to what other programs can do, the conversion time is a bit long, but since it only uses one core on multiple core systems you can easily use you systems for other things while it’s converting, of course though you have to have a multi-core system…
The additional CamStudio is not a bad piece of software either, I’ve used it before in other reviews, it’s a nice little bonus.
Considering this software is free it’s not bad, it works…
If I had to rate QMC, I’d give it a 4.5 out of 5 score, especially taking into consideration the price of it, or lack thereof…
