Extra Video Converter Review

Well, this week I had planned on taking a look at A-One DVD Ripper, but it didn’t work correctly, supposedly it works with Vista, but yet every time I hit DSCF2275 ‘Convert’ the program crashed. So today I’m taking a look at Extra Video Converter, which doesn’t rip DVDs, it converts your already ripped movies or other video files over to many formats including PPC, which of course is why we’re interested in it..

The program works great and it works fast, it’s a bit on the expensive side though compared to other programs like this, but it might be worth it actually since it can convert to many popular formats and the fact that it’s very easy to use.

So continue on my fellow Tilt owners to check it out…

First up of course we check out the basic specs:

Quickly converts almost all video formats

Extra Video Converter is a powerful, universal video-conversion and video-split program that converts video files between all popular video formats. With this software, you can convert videos from AVI, DIVX, XVID, MPEG, MPG, WMV, ASF, RM, RMVB, DAT, MOV, SWF, FLV, VOB, and NSV to AVI, MPEG, Apple iPod, Sony PSP, Mobile 3gp, Microsoft Zune, WMV, YouTube, FLV, MOV, MP3, WMV, OGG, or WAV. After you click the shortcut the program opens up with default setting enabled. Everything you need is right there on the interface, there are no other sub-1 menus to find or search through, all of the settings are right there in the interface window, which is very nice, especially if you’re new to this sort of thing. Across the top are graphic and text representations of the file formats you can convert to, which makes things easier as well, though I’m not sure why ‘Mickey Mouse’ is representing PPC.. (I think I should be insulted actually…)

2 After Clicking on PPC the default setting come up, the default format to convert to is WMV, which of course I’ll be changing to AVI as that’s what I personally prefer.

After picking the format you’ll need to click the ‘+’ icon to find your movie, I had previously ripped Stargate Atlantis with another program to AVI format just for 3 such an occasion as this, so that’s what I’ll be using. The movie is 1.22 Gb in size, so it’s really big…

6 I’ve switched my output format to AVI and loaded the movie, so I think we’re ready to convert our movie.

Click the arrow or ‘Play’ button will start the conversion process, in the file window you can see the it gives you an estimated time to complete, along with 7 percentage and a running tally of the total size of the file.

8 It took a little over 13 minutes to complete the process, 13:26 to be exact.

The size of the output file was 277MB which is nice and small, you will be able to fit several movies on a microSD card depending on the size of course.9

I’ve got a quad core CPU in my computer so those with dual cores might experience a longer conversion time.

CPU Usage:

Average: 28%

Peak: 45%

So the CPU usage for a quad core computer isn’t bad at all, it doesn’t hog system resources, so you’ll be able to do other things while the conversion process is going on.

As for the output file it’s very near perfect, the video is nice and clear and the audio is perfectly synced to the video, what more could you ask for?

As for the program itself, it works great, it’s easy to use, and I can Recommend it to anyone looking for a very easy and quick way to convert their movies to a format that can be played on their phone..

For the price, well, that’s debatable, if the only reason you’re buying the program is to convert just to your phone, then I’d try and find something a bit cheaper, but if you convert to other formats then this program might be well worth the cost to you.

If I had to score this software then I could give it a 4 1/2 out of 5, it loses the 1/2 point for the higher than average price.
